5 Things to do in Delhi
Hello, I’m Neha from Nomadic Dreamz. I have been living in New Delhi, India for nearly 20 years now, so I think it is fairly accurate to say that I know the city rather well! I’m here today to share with you my suggestions on the top 5 things to do in Delhi if you are in the city for a short visit.
5-Visit the Qutub Minar
This 12th century tower is one of the earliest known Islamic monuments of India, and an important UNESCO World Heritage Site. Thanks to the excellent audio guide available here, visitors can explore the complex at their own pace. Apart from the Minar, the Qutub complex includes a mosque, tombs of erstwhile rulers, and the famous Iron Pillar of Emperor Ashoka. A visit to this tourist attraction is one of the most popular things to do in Delhi for all visitors, especially first-timers. If you enjoy history and architecture then do include a stop here in your Delhi sightseeing plans, it will be a few hours well spent!
4-Take a walking tour
Walking tours are a great way to get a closer look at the real face of a city and its people. A number of niche operators in Delhi organise walking tours in different parts of Delhi, taking travellers into narrow lanes, ancient temples, and to various local landmarks. The guide will enrich your experience by adding a personal commentary with insights from a local’s point of view. In my opinion, this is one of the best things to do in Delhi if you wish to understand the local geography and culture.
3-Explore Asia’s biggest spice market
The street called Khari Baoli , near the historic Red Fort of Delhi, is famous for its wholesale market of groceries and spices, selling everything from tea, spices and herbs to grains. It has been in existence since the 17th century. A rickshaw ride and stroll around this market, the largest of its kind in all of Asia, is one of the more colourful things to do in Delhi. You’ll come back with plenty of material for your Instagram feed, and a lot of fresh spices for your kitchen!
2-Pay respects at the Bangla Sahib Gurudwara
One of the most famous Sikh temples in Delhi, the Bangla Sahib Gurudwara in the Connaught Place area welcomes visitors of all faiths. Visit early in the morning to fully experience the serenity of this shrine. This is a place where visitors come to find inner peace. Every day, the Gurudwara offers free meals (Langar) to all who enter. You will find a number of lay people performing voluntary duties at the Gurudwara, which is called “Sewa”, since volunteering is a major part of the Sikh belief.
1-Explore Hauz Khas
The urban village of Hauz Khas in South Delhi offers a unique juxtaposition of medieval heritage monuments surrounded by a sprawl of designer studios, cafes, bars and restaurants. This place is, understandably, quite popular with tourists in Delhi and a visit here features high on the list of fun things to do in Delhi. After exploring the ruins of the Islamic monuments in the vicinity, treat yourself to some souvenir shopping and perhaps a drink or a meal in one of the quirky eateries here.
Hope this guide on interesting things to do in Delhi will help you plan an interesting couple of days in the city!
