It is the most popular tourist destination in Montenegro due to the remarkable buildings and glorious views. Kotor is located at the base of the Bay of Kotor and is surrounded by lush, towering mountains and vivid blue water. This city is also exceptionally historically significant, and its architecture and atmosphere are like no other.
There is a ton to do in Kotor; however, there are a few things that outshine the rest and are a must. Here they are:
5-Explore the Old Town
The Old Town in Kotor is a stunning site to see and explore. It is a UNESCO World Cultural Site that holds a rich and significant history of Montenegro. The Old Town is a massive maze of white stone buildings and streets, orange thatched roofs, churches, and shops. The whole area is a maze of winding streets and small alleyways. It almost feels like a set from Game of Throne!
Spending some time to walk around the Old Town and admire the architecture and town squares is the perfect thing to do in Kotor.
4-Hike the Kotor Fortress
Due to Kotor's prime location along the water and being surrounded by the towering Montenegrin mountains this city has some breathtaking views. The most famous and stunning view comes from the top of the Kotor Fortress from Castle San Giovanni. The hike to the Castle takes around 50 minutes each way and is an uphill battle. However, the breathtaking panoramic views from the top are completely worth it.
Just be sure to bring some water, wear shoes with rubber soles, and go when the sun is not at its strongest.
3-Admire the Churches
Montenegro's complicated past and long history has supplied Kotor with a plethora of stunning and historic churches. The churches in Kotor are pretty well preserved considering they date back to the 14th century. Going to a church and exploring such a meaningful attraction is the best way to understand and appreciate the city.
The churches are impressive both on the inside and on the outside. The most famous church in Kotor is Sveti Nikoli. This church is most recognizable by its two bell towers that are uneven in height due to economic hardships that prevented the completion of one.
2-Go on a Boat Ride
Kotor's location along the Bay of Kotor provides ample opportunity to head on a boat tour and explore the surrounding areas via the water. There are quite a few little villages along the bay that a boat can bring you to with ease. More so, there is the ever-popular island called Our Lady of the Rocks that is only reachable by boat.
A boat ride from Kotor to explore the surrounding areas will show you more of Montenegro and let you see the city of Kotor in all its brilliance from the water.
Kotor is full of small shops that are great for exploring and admiring. Shops are ranging from local boutiques to designer shops. In these shops, you can find trade stores, jewelry shops, book shops and a ton of souvenir shops. Spending some time looking in these shops at all the beautiful offerings is a great thing to do.
